Purpose
The CS&CSS was created to promote and improve the hobby in various ways; members exhibiting their collections, primarily at stamp shows, and sharing articles and information through our journal, Seal News, and by writing and editing specialized catalogs for sale, and creating free Christmas Seal albums on computer CD. Members meet at national and international stamp shows where they put our hobby and publications on display and give away Christmas Seals in society booths.
Seal News, our award winning Quarterly Journal, now in Color Editor of Seal News: David Teisler
What The Society Does The Society publishes catalogs for seal collectors and there are many recently completed and ongoing projects. Literature is the Society's main source of income, and members donate their work. Green's Catalog, named for CS&CSS member #2 Dick Green, was first published in 1930, and it remains the Bible of worldwide Christmas Seal collecting. It is divided into 3 parts, US National Christmas Seals, US Local Christmas Seals, and Foreign Christmas Seals. The 2009 edition of Green's part 1 is now nearly 200 pages long. This edition illustrates and prices all US National Christmas Seals, 1907 through 2009 Spring, including perforation and type varieties, sheets, proofs, essays etc. Seals tied on cover by postmark have been added and prices have been brought up to date. Many of our titles are now available on CDs, enabling anyone with a computer, software and a printer, to publish their own color catalogs. Keeping Society literature current and making it more useful is a primary goal of the CS&CSS. The 1984 edition of Green's part 2, US Local Christmas Seals, is currently being revised by Brian McInturff. A 2008 supplement to the 1984, Green's part 3 foreign section was finished by Charles Hoger, who has been editing Society literature for over thirty years. Tim McGinnis just finished his revision of the Easter Seal section of Mosbaugh's All Fund Catalog, and is beginning work on Boys Town seals, listed in Mosbaugh's Catholic section. Cliff Beattie recently finished his catalog of Canadian Easter Seals, and revision of Green's Canadian Local Christmas Seals. Our President, Lou Caprario, recently finished his Christmas Seal Button Book. George Painter is working on a census of Christmas Seals tied on cover. Many projects remain. Someone needs to consider creating an illustrated topical index to Christmas Seals.
